The Chinese medicine angle
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, severe shock, fright, or overwhelming experience is understood to scatter or fragment the Shen (mind-spirit) and deplete the Kidney energy. This corresponds closely to what trauma researchers describe as the fragmentation of the normal autobiographical self and the collapse of the body's threat-response regulation.
The Kidneys govern fear and are the foundation of the body's vital energy (Jing). When trauma is severe enough, Kidney Qi is depleted: manifesting as chronic fatigue, low libido, poor memory, a pervasive sense of unsafety, and the inability to feel settled in the body. Working with the Kidney meridian using EFT is a central element of this class.
Michael's approach integrates Chinese medicine theory with modern trauma-informed principles (including somatic experiencing concepts and elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), creating a framework that is both comprehensive and compassionate.
